What is .org?

.org is managed by the non-profit Public Interest Registry, which grew out of the Internet Society, and is one of the oldest extensions on the internet.

Registry: Public Interest Registry.

Who can register?

Open to everyone; there is no requirement to be a non-profit, even though the extension is strongly associated with associations and initiatives.

Rules and technology

A .org name may be up to 63 characters long and supports numerous languages as IDNs. As with all generic extensions under ICANN contracts, a 60-day transfer lock applies after registration or transfer. .org was one of the first DNSSEC-signed extensions.

Who is .org for?

For associations, NGOs, open-source projects, education and community initiatives that want to emphasise credibility and public benefit.

Pricing without renewal shock

A .org domain is planned at €16.68 per year at Sigma Hosting, including 20% VAT. The renewal price is identical: no teaser offer in the first year and no surprise on the second invoice. A transfer from another provider also costs €16.68 and extends the term by one year.

Domain registration is in preparation; until the registrar is connected, the prices are planned prices. You can take your domain to another provider at any time with the auth code.

Our tip

Austrian associations often combine .org with .at so the registered association name matches the web address.
