What is .dev?

.dev became generally available in 2019. Thanks to mandatory HTTPS, sites are encrypted by default — with us the automatic Let's Encrypt certificate is included anyway.

Who can register?

Open to everyone. The whole extension is on the browsers' HSTS preload list: websites under .dev only work over HTTPS.

Rules and technology

A .dev name may be up to 63 characters long. Since browsers only open .dev addresses over HTTPS, the certificate must be in place before the first visit; with Sigma Hosting this happens automatically. Transfers use an auth code and the ICANN 60-day lock applies.
